A region of shifting sand dunes extending several miles inland from the coast, roughly parallel to the stretch of Coastal Road between Ashkelon and Yavneh. The dunes are named for an ancient hero who supposedly died fighting raiders here.
These are not the gentle coastal dunes but rather significant hills of sand, some reaching 50 feet high, constantly reshaped by wind. Sparse vegetation clings to life - sea grass, thorny bushes, and occasional palm trees marking underground water. The dunes are difficult to cross and easy to get lost in.
The Dunes of Shimron have a reputation as a place of danger. Bandits use the dunes as hideouts, appearing to raid the Coastal Road before vanishing into the sand. Strange lights are sometimes seen at night, which locals attribute to spirits of the dead. Wise travelers stay on the road and avoid entering the dunes.
