The Sycamore Grove

The Sycamore Grove

A stand of ancient sycamore fig trees about 5 miles northeast of Ashkelon, located along the Inland Route near where it branches toward Tel Ashdod. The grove is a well-known landmark and rest stop for travelers.

Description

The grove consists of several dozen massive sycamore figs, some clearly centuries old with trunks so wide that three men cannot encircle them. The trees provide deep shade and bear fruit seasonally. A small spring emerges nearby, making this an ideal rest stop. Stone ruins suggest this was once a settled place.

Notable Features

  • The Ancient Trees: Some are hollow, large enough for people to shelter inside
  • The Spring: A small but reliable water source
  • The Old Altar: Weathered stones that might once have been a shrine or altar

Character

Local people consider the grove a peaceful, perhaps sacred place. Farmers sometimes leave small offerings at the old altar, asking for good harvests. Travelers are welcome to rest here, but troublemakers often find bad luck shortly after leaving.

Uses

  • Common meeting point for travelers and merchants
  • Rest stop for caravans
  • Sometimes used for local gatherings and festivals
  • Shepherds graze flocks in the area
