Overview

After Sigmund's funeral and the divine confrontation with Cernunnos and Anansi, the party traveled north along the Ebro River toward Alagón. What should have been a simple resupply stop turned into a series of catastrophic failures in operational security, culminating in pursuit by local guards, an ambush by Halfdan the Red, and the shocking reappearance of Mustafah the djinn—whom the party believed dead.

Major Events

River Travel to Alagón

The party departed the funeral site by boat, traveling up the Ebro River with Anansi still possessing Sigmund's corpse. The journey north was tense, with the unwelcome divine passenger treating everything as normal while the party processed both their grief and their supernatural predicament.

They arrived at Alagón, a market town at the confluence of the Ebro and Jalón rivers, intending to resupply before continuing north toward the Pyrenees.

The Disastrous Supply Run

The party split up for the resupply mission, making a critical operational error: Marlin, Jean-Luc, and Axel went into town while Bjorn and Askeladd stayed with the boat.

Jean-Luc and Axel attempted to maintain a low profile while Marlin handled the actual purchasing. At the market, Marlin encountered a grocer who:

  • Fleeced him on prices
  • Extracted his real name
  • Listened to Marlin's poorly constructed lie about not coming from Zaragoza (despite arriving on an obvious Zaragoza boat)
  • Had no information about Marlin's son
  • Suggested Marlin ask at the barracks

The grocer's behavior suggested he was either an informant or would become one very quickly.

The Barracks Visit

Following the grocer's suggestion, Marlin visited the local garrison barracks—a remarkably bold move for a fugitive. He attempted to:

  • Bond with soldiers over his military past (unsuccessful)
  • Ask about his son traveling north
  • Receive vague confirmation that the description "sounded familiar" but with no useful details
  • Lie again about his companions and origins

The soldiers were clearly suspicious, and Marlin's visit essentially announced the party's presence to the local authorities.

The Boy and "Mahmoud"

While Bjorn and Askeladd waited at the boat, a local boy approached them collecting "protection money" on behalf of someone named "Mahmoud."

Askeladd tried to blow the boy off, while Bjorn wanted to be generous and cooperative. After some argument between them, they:

  • Gave the boy a few apples
  • Provided their real names
  • Lied poorly (again) about coming from Zaragoza

The boy clearly noted everything and left with valuable intelligence about the party's composition and origin.

Flight North

Recognizing that their situation in Alagón had become untenable, the party departed quickly, heading overland north toward the mountains on a road that grew increasingly rough and isolated.

The Confrontation with Anansi

Hours into their journey north, on the dwindling mountain road, the party finally addressed the Anansi situation directly.

Anansi's Offer: The spider god proposed a bargain, positioning himself as their Homer—the one who would tell their story and ensure it was remembered. He offered to:

  • Protect them from Halfdan the Red (revealing he was being pursued)
  • Shield them from "the djinn" who was hunting them
  • Guarantee they would have a legendary tale to tell

This was news to the players, who didn't fully understand the nature of the threats Anansi described.

Bjorn's Prayer: Rather than accept Anansi's bargain, Bjorn offered a humble and sincere prayer asking Anansi to leave them in peace.

The Prayer Worked. Anansi—trickster god, story collector, and possessor of their dead friend's body—simply left. He departed without resistance, without negotiation, without trickery. He left Sigmund's body behind and vanished.

This was witnessed by the boy from town, who had been following and spying on the party. He immediately fled when the supernatural encounter occurred.

The Guards Arrive

Roughly two hours later, guards from Alagón caught up to the party on the mountain road. The authorities had clearly pieced together the party's identity and connection to The Prince Assassination in Zaragoza.

Jean-Luc, supported by Bjorn and Marlin, managed to intimidate or convince the guards to withdraw. The confrontation was tense but seemed to be resolving without violence.

Then Halfdan the Red intervened.

Halfdan's Ambush

Hidden in a tree overlooking the confrontation, Halfdan shot one of the fleeing guards with a crossbow—presumably to make the party look more violent and criminal, removing any remaining diplomatic options.

He jumped down from his hiding place and confronted the party, particularly Bjorn, engaging in verbal sparring.

Halfdan made his position clear:

  • He serves the Emir of Valencia
  • The Emir wants the party's heads
  • He intends to bring them in (capture or kill unclear)

The party refused to surrender.

Mustafah's Return

Just as the confrontation with Halfdan reached its breaking point, Mustafah appeared.

The djinn's appearance was shocking to the party for two reasons:

  1. They had met Mustafah before in what the GM described as an "interesting scene months ago"
  2. They believed he had died

The session ended on this cliffhanger: the party trapped between Halfdan the Red and Mustafah the djinn, with no clear allies and no divine protection.

Character Moments

Bjorn:

  • Wanted to be generous with the protection-money boy (showing his belief about proving Norse civility)
  • Gave real name multiple times despite being a fugitive
  • Delivered a humble, effective prayer to Anansi that actually worked
  • Engaged Halfdan in verbal confrontation
  • His relationship with the gods continues to evolve dramatically

Askeladd:

  • Pragmatic about the protection money situation
  • Argued with Bjorn about operational security
  • Gave real name anyway

Marlin:

  • Continued searching for his son despite the danger
  • Made multiple poor attempts at deception
  • Tried to leverage his military background
  • Got fleeced by a grocer
  • Helped intimidate the guards later

Jean-Luc:

  • Maintained low profile in town
  • Successfully intimidated/convinced guards to withdraw
  • Showed restraint and tactical thinking

Axel:

  • Stayed low profile during supply run
  • Let others take the lead in negotiations

Anansi:

  • Offered to be their "Homer" and story-teller
  • Revealed knowledge of threats the party didn't know about
  • Left peacefully when asked—surprising everyone
  • Left Sigmund's body behind

Halfdan the Red:

  • Demonstrated patience and tactical thinking (hiding in tree)
  • Shot fleeing guard to eliminate diplomatic options
  • Working for Emir of Valencia
  • Confrontational but willing to banter

Mustafah:

  • Returned despite party believing him dead
  • Arrived at crucial moment
  • True intentions unknown

Critical Failures

Operational Security Disasters:

  1. Marlin gave real name to grocer
  2. Bjorn and Askeladd gave real names to boy
  3. Multiple poor lies about not being from Zaragoza (while arriving on Zaragoza boat)
  4. Marlin visited garrison barracks as a fugitive
  5. Boy witnessed supernatural encounter and fled with information

These failures essentially announced the party's presence, identity, and rough capabilities to the authorities and their pursuers.

Unresolved Questions

  1. Why did Anansi leave so easily? Was Bjorn's prayer that powerful, or did Anansi get what he wanted?
  2. What does Mustafah want? Is he hunting Anansi (who's now gone), or does he have business with the party?
  3. What was the "interesting scene" where the party met Mustafah before?
  4. Why did the party think Mustafah was dead?
  5. Does Halfdan know about the party's leverage (the letter revealing his affair and embezzlement)?
  6. Is Mustafah hunting Anansi as part of Islam's spread into Africa, as theorized?
  7. Can the party use their blackmail material against Halfdan?
  8. Will Mustafah be an ally or enemy?
  9. What happened to Sigmund's body after Anansi left it?
  10. Did "Mahmoud" get a report from his boy?
  11. What will Marlin's son's trail look like after this?

Next Session Setup

The party is cornered on a remote mountain road between two powerful enemies:

With Anansi gone (taking away potential protection) and their operational security in tatters, the party faces a desperate situation. They have:

  • Blackmail material against Halfdan (if they think to use it)
  • Unknown relationship with Mustafah (positive history but current intentions unclear)
  • No divine protection
  • Limited escape routes in mountain terrain

The confrontation will determine whether the party can talk, fight, or flee their way out—and whether Mustafah is the solution to their Halfdan problem or a worse threat entirely.
