Avalon

Avalon

Overview

Avalon is one of the major cities of The Reign of Man, also known by its modern name Vlórë. It is a proud city of humanity that became the site of the first major victory of The Beleaguered Gods during their return to the world.

The Siege of Avalon

Avalon was besieged by a massive elven army led by Ohtar (Eramos in disguise), consisting of elves, trolls, and bloodragers. The city appeared doomed to fall, with its defenders overwhelmed and hope all but lost.

The Battle

During the city's darkest hour, three strangers appeared - Vlad Dashing, Zeekon, and Alam Ka'enat Kyandr. These were revealed to be The Beleaguered Gods, the Old Gods who had returned after twelve centuries.

The battle for Avalon included:

  • The Wall Defense: The Beleaguered Gods fought from the city walls, with Zeekon summoning avalanches and storms, Alam raining fireballs on bloodragers, and Vlad calming the panicked population and raising morale
  • Church Conflict: The clerics of The Church of the Five initially opposed the Old Gods, even ordering archers to shoot them, until Lieutenant William Hawkins intervened
  • The Gunpowder Plot: A plan devised by Jeremiah Kirkwood (later revealed to be Fate itself) to use dried whale oil explosives in the tunnels beneath the elven army
  • The Underground Battle: In the Hall of the Gods beneath the city, the Beleaguered Gods fought Ohtar/Eramos and his forces, with Crone of The Stone Council intervening to save Eramos before his defeat
  • The Explosion: Vlad lit the fuse that detonated the explosives, killing six thousand elves and breaking the siege

Aftermath

Leadership

During the siege, the city's military defense was coordinated by:

  • Hierophant Nilus Graylock - In charge of the human army
  • Lieutenant William Hawkins - A champion of courage and nobility who became the "First Champion of the World" and supported the Beleaguered Gods
  • Church Officials - Initially opposed the Old Gods' intervention

Geography

  • The city has walls defended by archers and magical shields
  • Beneath Avalon lies the Hall of the Gods, a network of tunnels that became the site of the critical underground battle
  • The city has a "Big Tent Headquarters" for military coordination
  • Connected to the sanctuary of Titus Arrakis via underground tunnels

Religious Significance

  • Before the siege, the city's primary worship was directed toward Likos and The Church of the Five
  • After the Battle of Avalon, the city became a center of worship for The Beleaguered Gods
  • The city represents the first major population center to openly embrace the returned Old Gods over the Akkosian Pantheon

Note on Naming

The city appears to be referred to as both "Avalon" (its historical name) and "Vlórë" (possibly its modern name or the name used by the Akkosian church). The relationship between these names and whether they refer to the same city or different periods in its history is unclear.
